What is the speciality of a varNam?
1. varNams are literary songs praising the Lord. We need not take it as only Hindu God. Almighty, if at all he-she-it exists, cannot be different religions just as we cannot have Ganga River or Himalayan Mountains for each religion separately. Calling by name, any name can be used.
2. varNams try to depict full picture of a tune (rAga) by covering its entire structure of at least three octaves. Other literary works like kritis / kirtanas/film songs have to go by the words, context, of the story/theme. varNas concentrate more on musical purity and integrity of a tune.
When are varNams sung?
Many South Indian Classical concerts whether vocal or instrumental, start with varNas, though not compulsory. It is a tradition, often respected.
What are important features of sAranga tune?
1. Born from the maternal tune No. 65 (MeLakarta 65) i.e. KalyANi.
2. KalyANi (Yaman in Hindusthani Music) uses f# (prati madhyamam or tIvra madhyamam).
3. But sAranga uses both the f's i.e. f and f# (suddha madhyamam and the stronger madhyamam).
4. sAranga has a somewhat zig-zag ascendence and descendence (ArOhaNa and avarOhaNa-given below).
5. sAranga apparently derives its name from a bird ranging between a crane and a swan.
