Explanation for the name 'simhEndra madhyamam'
simham = lion. indra = king. madhyamam = waist. simhendra = king of lions. A lion's waist will be very slender. But names of tunes, often, do not have relationships with the moods they depict. SimhEndra madhyamam uses sharp notes like " ^d' ". It has strains of sadness and melancholy accompanying with it.
Poet and composer the tyAgarAja perfected the composition nIdu caraNamule gati (I take refuge at your feet). The composition aptly reflects the 'sad' mood of the tune. The literature also indicates great renunciation. The poet says "This body is a relic of sins. I cannot endure the sufferings in this body. Redeem me somehow."
Information for Euro-American Music
This tune uses all the seven notes. Ascendence order: c,d,^d,^f,g,^g,b,c'. Descendence order: c',b,^g,g,^f,^d,d,c. In CMajor d,g,b, remain unchanged. e becomes soft with ^d. f becomes strong with ^f. a becomes soft with ^g.
Rhythm used in this composition has a 3+2+2 =7 beat structure called 'Mishra CApu" in KarnATic Music.
Information for North Indian Music - HindusthAni Music
I am unable to trace the tune simhEndra madhyamam in HindusthAni Music. Nor its ThATh. simhEndra madhyamam uses all the seven notes and eminently qualifies to be an independent ThATH. In KarnATic music, it is a mother tune with mElakarta No. 57. Hence, I hope HindusthAni music experts will recognise simhEndra madhyamam as an independent ThATh someday.

For composers: you can copy the following notation in your text editor like notepad and save it as txt filename. Then, you can convert into midi by the command 'abc2midi filename'. Thereafter, you can further convert into wav, using timidity filename.mid command and wave into mp3 by lame filename.wav filename.mp3 command. By modifying Q: field below you can increase/reduce the tempo. M: is the Meter field. I do not know the rationale, but abc2midi insists that it should always be a fraction and that the denominator should always be an exponential of 2. L: is the length field. Length of each bar for the rhythm mishra cApu consists of 14 x 1/8 note lengths. We have four such bars in each line. |: and :| in the body are instructions to repeat a particular line or portion. Octave = -1 in the K field indicates that we are increasing bassness by reducing the octave.
