The term 'nim' or 'NIM' used below denotes North Indian Music or HindusthAni Musc. The term 'sim' or 'SIM' used below denotes South Indian Music or the CarnATic Music.
The tune "gAnamUrtE" belongs to the genre of 'CarnATic Music' of South India.
gAnamUrtE is a dvirishabh rAga i.e. it uses both the rishabhas - In abc2midi notation, it means: uses both ^c (soft rishabh) and d (strong rishabh).
In SIM: It uses both suddha rishabham and catusriti rishabham-- but called suddha gAndhARam. Vocalists pronounce the catusriti rishabha -aka- suddha gAndhAram as 'ga'. Thus we get our sarigama padanisa complete, as a separate Mother tune No. 3 (mElakarta No.3 gAnamUrtE).
In NIM: The ArOhi works out to: sa, kOmal soft rishabh, suddh strong rishabh, No gandhAr, suddh madhyam, pa, kOmal dhaivat, suddh nishAd. AvarOhi consists of sa, ni, dha, pa, ma, strong ri, soft ri, sa.
The poet-composer tyAgarAja perfected the tune gAnamUrti in his composition 'gAnAmurtE, vEnugAna mUrTE'. The name of the composition is same as the name of the rAga. vEnu = flute. gAna= singing. vEnugAna = flute playing. murTE = Oh the form playing the flute. Lord Krishna is the God who plays the flute. The musicians of other religions need not simply hate this composition as pagan or poly-theistic. If the God is one, and if hesheit can be called by any name (Mahatma Gandhi called this 'Isvar allAh terE nAm' meaning ISvar and allAh are your names), it makes little difference whether it is addressed to Yehova or allAh or Krishna. The name, just becomes a geographical variation. Anyway, this blog is not a religious blog. It is a musical blog. Any musician can take the tune for its melodic and rhythmic values.
rhythm used in this composition: Adi tALam or tIn tAL or 4/8/16 structure.
The rhythm bars used in the abc2midi notation below contain 8 note lengths in each bar.
How to convert this notation into midi and mp3?
Copy the notation into a txt file using a text editor like note pad and save as a txt file with or without the suffix txt.
Go to the C: in windows. Go to command line in linux/ubuntu etc. abc2midi.exe file and your notation file should be in the same directory or folder.
Command to type: abc2midi notationfilename (no full stop at the end).
You will get your filename.mid.
Midi files are small in size and occupy less memory. Apart from timidity, windows media player plays them.
If you want to listen to an mp3 player which may not have a computer, you may need an mp3 file.
Commands for conversion of mid into mp3:
timidity -Ow filename.mid
You will get filename.wav.
lame filename.wav filename.mp3.
This converts a wave file into mp3, provided you have timidity and lame installed on your system.
If you have time or patience, you can open the mp3 file in 'audacity' and further improve it.
Notation for pasting into the notepad or a text editor starts:--
