Question: Is there a similarity between bAgESwari and SrI ranjani?
Naturally. They sound similar, because " ^dfa^a " (gamadhani) is common. Besides, bAgESwari uses 'g' (pa) less. But Sri Ranjani uses 'cd^df' (sarigama), where as bAgESwari uses 'd^dfa' (sagamada). This distinction we can recognise, by listening to bAgESwari and Sri Ranjani alternately (one after another). Continuous ear training will help us a lot.
The problem with Classical Instrumental Music, whether North Indian or South Indian is, listeners need 1) knowledge of the basic rAgas 2) repeat listening practice of short pieces. In the absence of these, listeners get bored after a few minutes of hearing, because they cannot make any head and tail of the music they are hearing. In case of film music, the situation is different because, they listen to vocals, before they happen to listen to instrumental tunes. They become slaves to film music because, from their childhood, their parents and relatives encourage them to listen to film tunes or they find their roll models-- parents, uncles and aunts listening to the film music. It is ultimately, the ability to recognise and understand, which will decide the taste.
It is difficult to listen to and appreciate Indian classical instrumental music without prior learning. Children in their tight homework schedules, do not have the time to spare. Hence, they are left with the film music, to fall back up on, just as we get addicted to junk food.
