Abbreviations: NIM or nim = North Indian Music or HindusthAni music. SIM or sim = South Indian Music or CarnATic Music.
tune simhavAhini rAga belongs to the genre SIM.
simhavAhini is hexa-septa tonic i.e. it uses 6 notes in ascendence and 7 notes in descendence.
Ascendence in abc2midi notation: c,e,f,g,^g,b,c'. (d is the omission Hence hexa.).
Descendence: c',b,^g,g,f,e,d,c.
NIM: I am unable to find an equivalent rAg. Hence, we can use the same name simhavAhini in nim also. ThATh (Mother tune): The mother tune of simhavAhini is sarasAngi. But it is not recognised as a ThATh in nim. NIM experts may have probably to add sarasAngi as a ThATh.
ArOhi of simhavAhini: sa, strong ga, soft ma, pa, soft dha, strong ni.
avarOhi: sa', ni, dha, pa, ma, ga, strong ri, sa.
SIM: simhavAhini's mother tune is sarasAngi. Its No. is 27 (mELakarta 27).
ArOhaNa: sa, strong ga, soft ma, pa, soft da, strong ni. avarOhaNa: sa', ni, da, pa, ma, ga, strong ri, sa.
Question: How sarasAngi (mother tune 27) differs from ShankarAbharaNam (mother tune 29).
Ans: ShankarAbharaNam uses CMajor (c,d,e,f,g,a,b). SarasAngi uses modified g instead of 'a', i.e. ^g (c,d,e,f,g,^g,b,c'). As ^g is softer than a, we can say that sarasAngi tends to be softer than CMajor ShankarAbharaNam.
Composition here presented: 'nenaruncarA nA paina' by tyAgarAja. Meaning: "Set your grace on me".
Rhythm used: Adi tALam or tIn tAL or 4/8/16 frame.
Question: What is the meaning of X:1?
Ans: The fields X: (X colon) to K: (K colon) below constitute the 'header part' of the notation file which is a txt file. This txt notation file can contain any number of songs or tunes. The first tune is X:1. The second is X:2. So on. This method is convenient, for storing a number of tunes/songs. When you give abc2midi command, if we have 10 songs in the txt file, we shall get 10 midi files with the Xnumber added to the file. For example in 'simhavahini' text file, if we have 10 songs, we shall get 10 midi files with names simhavahini1.mid, simhavahini2.mid, simhavahini3.mid etc. X:1 X:2 X:3 are like individual flowers. The text file is the garland which holds all the flowers. I am always giving in my notations, the X:1 because I am giving only one tune/song at a time.
If you are interested in collecting a garland of notations txt file, I give below link for one source I found on the net. (Usual disclaimer clause applies when you use the link i.e. no warranty etc.)
This link has a file of 28 notations with 28 X:nos.: Click to go to http://abc.sourceforge.net/abcMIDI/original/coll.txt.
Most collections on the Net are available as zip files. You can download, and unzip them for further processing. I have downloaded a few of such collections, unzipped them, got the abc files and converted them into midi. They are good, no doubt. They will serve us as models to us for doing our own work.
I shall discuss some of the notations from those files, later. Right now, I have an agenda of using abc2midi on 50 notations, at least and compare it with tunescript. This will take few more weeks.
Composers can copy and post from this point, in their text editor and use it further
