nAga means serpant.
svara means note.
nAgasvara's one meaning is: a gourd-reed played by a snake-charmer. Till the end of 20th Century, snake-charming was very popular in Indian villages.
Avali - means 'line or row'. e.g.; DIpAvaLi means a row of lamps.
Some Indian rAgas (tunes) do not reflect the moods which their names indicate. The tune 'nAgasvarAvali' does not produce any feeling of hearing to a snake-charmer's reed. Musicians have used some other tunes like kharaharapriya, HindusthAni tOdi, bhIm palAsi for that purpose.
Carnatic Music (South Indian Music) does not have many literary compositions based on this tune.
I have heard this rAga rarely in Classical Music Concerts also.
As a pentatonic rAga (raga of 5 notes or auDavam), this rAga pales in popularity before HindOLam (mAlkhauns), mOhana (bhUp and dEshkar), madhyamAvati (mEgh), and brindAvani sArang.
I have not heard this rAga being sung or played by North Indian Musicians in their classical concerts on All India Radio.
On a prima facie hearing, this rAga sounds rather unappealing. But, once we start listening to it occasionally, once we start identifying its notes and movement (sancAram), we shall start enjoying it.
Ascendence, descendence (ArOhaNa, avarOhaNa, mUrchana): c,e,f,g,a,c'.
Hindusthani Music: sa, suddh ga, suddh ma, pa, suddh dha.
CarnAtic Music: sa, antara ga, suddh ma, pa, catusriti dha.
Mother tunes: HindusthAni: We can take it as belonging to khamAj or bilAval. CarnATic: We can take it under Mother tune No. 28 Har kAmbHOji. Technically it may not be wrong to take it under 29 ShankarAbharaNam, as we are not going to use 'b' anyway.
abc notation: We can take it under C major, as we are not going to use 'b' anyway. 'D' is also a taboo.
Rhythm used in this notation and mp3: 4/8/16 or Adi tALa or tIn tAL.
One experience: For the purpose of writing accurate rhythms of mathematical exactitude, abc2midi is better than tunescript, because abc2midi captures rhythm calculation errors and provides error reports as warning. But it does not stop producing the mid. Thus, it will tell you that you are wrong, but will not obstruct you. Tunescript does not catch rhythm calculation errors and does not obstruct. It is very benevolent.
Second practical experience: abc2midi does not tolerate blank lines in body. I have a habit of leaving blank lines between rhythm cycle sets and refrains for improving clarity and readability of the notation. If we leave a blank line, sounds will stop from that point, even if there is no other error in the remaining notation. For example, this notation is for approx. 6 minutes. I could initially get a midi file only for 54 seconds, as I left a blankline in the notation text.
