139 Listening Exercise in Rag Multani for Ear Training

Earlier, Multan was a city and Province in ancient and medieval undivided India.

Multan is now a city in Pakisthan.

This North Indian Music tune Multani, might have had its origin in Multan.

Multani belongs to HindusthAni tODi thAT (group of tunes).  This group of tunes is suitable for expression of compassion and grief (karuNa rasa pradhAna). 


Multani is pentatonic in ascendance.  c# and g# are omitted.  c,d#,f#,g,b,c' are the ascendant notes (ArOhaNa).

Multani has all the seven notes in descendant. c',b,g#,g,f#,d#,c#,c.

Chief elements of the tune are: b,c,   f#,d#, g,d#,f#,g, f#d# f#d# gd#c#c.

Leading note (vAdi svara) is g.  Sub-leader (samvAdi) is c.

c#,d#,g# are not to get much importance.   If these are used profusely, it becomes to distinguish it from HindusthAni tODi (multani's mother tune).
